The President and General Secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau and Dr Mohammed Sanusi, have resigned their positions, barely weeks before the federation’s elective congress.
Sanusi confirmed the development to Daily Sunspots, saying, “Yes, the news about the resignation of the president and myself is true.”
The resignation comes amid intense pressure on the NFF leadership and a reported running battle with the Shehu Dikko-led National Sports Commission (NSC) over several issues, including funding for administrative and football competitions.
Interestingly, Gusau had, on Wednesday, denied being under any form of pressure while speaking to journalists at the unveiling of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
The development comes just weeks before the NFF elective congress scheduled for September 27 in Lafia, Nasarawa State, throwing the planned election into uncertainty.
The resignation marks an unprecedented development in Nigerian football administration, with the report describing it as the first time the top leadership of the federation has resigned in such circumstances.
With Gusau and Sanusi now out of office, attention will shift to how the NFF will navigate the leadership vacuum and whether the September 27 elective congress will proceed as scheduled.
