The Delta State Police Command has commenced a statewide enforcement operation aimed at cracking down on traffic violations and vehicles operating without proper documentation.
The operation, tagged “Operation Velvet,” began in Asaba on Tuesday following a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu.
The state Commissioner of Police, CP Samuel Etaifo Erale, who led the flag-off ceremony in Asaba, said the exercise was designed to strengthen compliance with vehicle and traffic regulations, improve road safety and enhance security across Delta State.
The enforcement exercise is being carried out simultaneously across the state’s nine area commands and police divisions.
According to the police, the operation targets vehicles without valid documents, unregistered vehicles, vehicles without proper number plates, as well as those using defaced, obscured, altered or deliberately covered number plates.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, said that 10 vehicles had already been impounded in Asaba during the initial phase of the operation for various traffic violations.
He said the affected vehicles had been taken to the mobile court in Asaba, where they were undergoing judicial proceedings.
“The operation targets vehicles without valid documents, unregistered vehicles, vehicles without number plates, and vehicles bearing defaced, obscured, altered or deliberately covered number plates,” Edafe said.
Speaking during the launch, CP Erale urged motorists and vehicle owners to ensure that their vehicle documents were valid and up to date, while approved number plates should be properly displayed and clearly visible.
The Commissioner also directed police officers deployed for the exercise to conduct themselves professionally and civilly.
He warned that extortion, harassment and other forms of misconduct by officers would not be tolerated.
Erale said the command was determined to ensure proper identification of vehicles, prevent criminal elements from exploiting improperly identified vehicles and improve safety and security on roads across the state.
He appealed to residents and motorists to cooperate with the police, assuring that the enforcement would be carried out with respect for human rights and the dignity of citizens.
