A 13-year-old pupil has been detained after a knife attack at a school in northwestern Slovakia left a 61-year-old teacher dead and two others injured.
The attack occurred on Tuesday morning at a school in Staškov, near the Czech border.
Police said the pupil was taken into custody and was being investigated on suspicion of premeditated murder. Authorities said the situation was under control and that there was no further immediate threat to the public.
Emergency officials said the 61-year-old woman died from injuries sustained during the attack. A 44-year-old woman suffered a stab wound to the chest and was taken to hospital, while a schoolgirl was transported to hospital in critical condition.
Slovak Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok said the attack happened after the first class of the day, while officials confirmed that emergency and security teams were deployed to the school.
The motive for the attack had not been established as of Tuesday. Education Minister Tomas Drucker declined to speculate on whether bullying was involved.
President Peter Pellegrini expressed shock over the incident and called for calm, while Prime Minister Robert Fico extended his condolences to the victims and their families.
The incident comes after previous deadly school attacks in Slovakia, including a 2025 knife attack in which a student killed a teacher and another pupil.
