German authorities have warned Nigerians applying for visas against paying agents or third parties to secure appointments, stressing that visa appointment bookings are free and should be made through the official channels.
The German Mission in Nigeria issued the warning amid concerns over applicants using unofficial means to begin or facilitate their visa applications.
According to the mission, applicants should first determine the appropriate visa category based on the purpose and duration of their intended stay and establish which German diplomatic mission is responsible for processing their application.
For short visits of up to 90 days within a 180-day period, such as tourism and family visits, applicants generally require a Schengen visa. Those planning to stay in Germany for more than 90 days generally require a national visa for purposes including employment, study, vocational training and certain family-reunification cases.
Applicants are advised to use the official online appointment system for the relevant visa category and carefully follow the instructions provided.
The German mission specifically warned applicants against paying agents or other third parties to obtain visa appointments.
“Booking an appointment is FREE OF CHARGE,” the German mission states on its official visa information page, adding that it does not encourage appointments being booked through agencies or other third parties for a fee.
The authorities also cautioned applicants to select the correct visa category when booking appointments. Those who make bookings under the wrong category may be denied admission and required to make a new appointment.
For certain long-stay visa categories, applicants can begin the process through Germany’s Consular Services Portal by completing the application online and uploading their documents. However, applicants are still required to attend an appointment in person for identity checks, original document verification, biometric data collection and, where applicable, an interview.
The German authorities further stated that documents sent in advance by email cannot be considered for visa processing. Applicants are expected to present the required original documents and supporting copies during their appointments.
The mission urged Nigerians seeking German visas to rely on official German government information and avoid individuals or organisations demanding payment to obtain appointments.
It said following the prescribed procedure would help applicants avoid unnecessary payments, incorrect bookings and delays in the visa application process.
