Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has pledged to make governance measurable and accountable if elected president in the 2027 general elections.
Obi made the commitment in his Independence Day address on Thursday, promising that his administration would focus on the welfare and productivity of Nigerians.
He said public resources under his proposed government would be deployed for the benefit of citizens, while Nigerians would begin to see tangible results of purposeful leadership within the first year.
“As President of Nigeria, I will make governance measurable, accountable and centred on the welfare and productivity of our people,” Obi said.
He also stressed that public office should be treated as a sacred trust and that effective leadership must be responsive to the needs of citizens.
Obi said his vision was to build a Nigeria that is secure, united and productive, while urging citizens to demand accountability from those entrusted with public office.
“The Nigeria we desire will not be built by prayers alone, nor by promises alone,” he said. “It will be built by leadership that understands that public office is a sacred trust, by citizens who demand accountability, and by all of us who refuse to accept failure as our destiny.”
He added that his proposed administration would prioritise addressing challenges affecting Nigerians, including insecurity, poverty, unemployment and inadequate access to basic services.
