The Federal Government is set to make a formal reconciliation declaration over the 1967 Asaba Massacre, 59 years after hundreds of civilians were killed during the Nigerian Civil War.
Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori disclosed this on Wednesday during the 59th anniversary memorial of the massacre in Asaba.
The governor, who was represented by the Secretary to the Delta State Government, Dr Kingsley Emu, said official recognition of the tragedy was essential to achieving reconciliation.
According to him, the state government had already acknowledged the massacre and expressed optimism that the Federal Government would formally recognise the incident.
He said the acknowledgement by the different levels of government would be an important step towards healing the wounds associated with the tragedy.
The Asaba Massacre occurred during the Nigerian Civil War in 1967, when hundreds of civilians were killed by Federal troops in Asaba.
The planned reconciliation declaration is expected to renew national attention on one of the most painful episodes of the civil war and efforts to preserve its history for future generations.
