The Federal Government has dismissed reports that it plans to increase electricity tariffs or impose additional financial pressure on consumers from next year.
Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, gave the assurance on Monday in Abuja while briefing journalists to mark his first 100 days in office.
Tegbe said there were no plans for an immediate tariff increase, stressing that the government’s priority was to improve electricity supply and service delivery without placing additional burdens on Nigerians.
He said the Federal Government was focused on strengthening the power sector by improving electricity generation, transmission and distribution.
According to the minister, efforts were also ongoing to provide more reliable electricity across the country while addressing challenges affecting service delivery.
The clarification came amid reports and public concerns over the future of electricity subsidies and the possibility of higher tariffs from 2027.
Earlier statements by the minister had indicated that the government was considering changes to the subsidy regime as part of efforts to address financial challenges in the power sector. However, Tegbe has maintained that such reforms should not translate into an immediate increase in electricity tariffs.
The minister reiterated that the government’s focus remained on improving power supply, expanding access to reliable electricity and strengthening the financial sustainability of the sector.
