The Enugu State Police Command has identified the 27-year-old woman allegedly killed by her boyfriend, Okpara Chibuike Emmanuel, as Chinyere Rosemary Ugwu.
Ugwu, according to the police, was a graduate of Medical Laboratory Science from the Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu, and had recently completed her National Youth Service Corps programme.
The command disclosed her identity in an update on the investigation on Friday, adding that her parents and siblings had also been identified and interviewed.
The Commissioner of Police, Mamman Giwa, reportedly met with the deceased’s family and assured them that justice would be served in the case.
Emmanuel, 30, was arrested following the alleged killing of Ugwu at his residence in the Olympic Layout area of Enugu.
The police had earlier said preliminary investigations indicated that the incident followed an argument over allegations concerning the source of a Human Immunodeficiency Virus infection.
According to the police, the suspect allegedly struck Ugwu on the head with a pestle, resulting in her death. Her remains were then allegedly wrapped in nylon and concealed inside the toilet of his apartment.
The body was reportedly discovered after a foul odour attracted neighbours, who forced the door open and apprehended the suspect before police arrived.
The remains were evacuated to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while police operatives attached to the Awkunanaw Division reportedly rescued the suspect from an angry mob and took him into custody.
Following the latest development, the police urged members of the public, particularly women, to exercise caution in their relationships and ensure that trusted persons are aware of their whereabouts.
The command also advised people not to assume that familiarity with someone automatically guarantees their safety, urging the public to remain vigilant, trust their instincts and take steps to avoid potentially dangerous situations.
