Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Timi Frank, has called on United States President Donald Trump to impose visa restrictions and freeze the assets of Nigerian officials who may be involved in manipulating the 2027 general elections.
Frank made the appeal in a notice addressed to Trump on Tuesday, urging the US government to intervene diplomatically before the elections to promote transparency and ensure a credible electoral process.
He proposed a policy he described as “No Mandate From Fraud,” under which individuals implicated in electoral manipulation would face targeted sanctions, regardless of their political positions or affiliations.
According to him, preventing electoral fraud requires action before voting takes place rather than waiting until alleged irregularities have occurred.
“The Trump administration must act now to ensure electoral integrity in Nigeria. The time to act is before the elections, not after the damage has been done,” Frank said.
He added that anyone involved in manipulating, falsifying or rigging the 2027 elections should face individual consequences.
Frank also urged Washington to engage President Bola Tinubu and other Nigerian political leaders ahead of the polls, arguing that diplomatic pressure could help discourage electoral malpractice.
He called for cooperation between the United States and its European allies to promote electoral transparency and hold accountable any officials found to have undermined the credibility of the process.
The former APC spokesman further raised concerns about the composition of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), questioning whether the commission could maintain public confidence amid allegations of ethnic considerations in appointments to key positions.
He argued that electoral credibility was crucial to democratic accountability, economic development and national stability.
Frank also linked credible elections to efforts to address Nigeria’s economic difficulties and migration challenges, maintaining that accountable leadership could help restore public confidence in governance.
His appeal comes as political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
However, the proposed sanctions remain Frank’s request, and there is no confirmation that the Trump administration has adopted the proposal or announced plans to impose the measures.
