Tension has gripped residents of Anambra State following the tragic killing of a woman by a stray bullet fired by a trigger-happy security operative.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, at the ever-busy Ibeto Junction in Nnewi. According to eyewitness accounts, the operative, a member of the Agunechemba security outfit, opened fire while attempting to disperse a heavy traffic gridlock to make way for a convoy.
The victim, identified as Chiamaka Okeke, was reportedly struck by the bullet and collapsed on the spot. Chaos immediately erupted as panicked commuters fled the scene, while the security personnel responsible allegedly abandoned the area in haste.
An eyewitness recounted, “We were all stuck in traffic when the Agunechemba operatives arrived. They started shooting in the air to clear the road for their vehicles. Suddenly, we heard a scream—Chiamaka had been hit. Everyone ran for cover. It was terrifying.”
Chiamaka was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead by medical personnel on duty.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command released a statement on Wednesday, April 16:
“The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Police Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu fwc, MNIPS, PhD, urges residents to remain calm. The Command is already in contact with the relevant security outfit to identify the suspect and ensure justice is served. Investigations are ongoing and further updates will be provided.”
