President Bola Tinubu has extended his working vacation in Europe by a few days and is expected to return to Nigeria at the weekend, the Presidency announced on Monday.
Tinubu left Nigeria on August 30 for London, where he began his working vacation, before travelling to Paris, France, for engagements with French President Emmanuel Macron and businessman Vincent Bolloré.
According to the Presidency, Tinubu has remained in contact with officials in Nigeria and continued to direct government affairs while abroad.
Among the decisions attributed to the President during his absence was the directive for an independent panel to investigate the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners in Minna, Niger State, following their detention by personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
Vice President Kashim Shettima had represented Tinubu at some official functions while the President was away. Shettima, however, departed Abuja on September 20 for New York to attend the 81st United Nations General Assembly, where he is expected to present Nigeria’s national statement.
With Shettima away, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, will continue to represent the President at official engagements, according to the Presidency.
The Presidency also said Senator Abubakar Yari, Director-General of the Presidential Campaign Council, had been leading consultations with prominent traditional rulers and other stakeholders across the country.
It further rejected claims concerning Tinubu’s absence from the United Nations General Assembly, describing the suggestions as baseless and irresponsible. The Presidency said Shettima’s representation at the gathering was part of the President’s arrangements.
Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria at the weekend following the extension of his working vacation.
