African Action Congress presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has criticised the reception accorded President Bola Tinubu following his return to Nigeria after about four weeks abroad.
Sowore made the remarks in a post on X, accompanying it with a video of Tinubu being welcomed at the airport.
He alleged that Nigeria had repeatedly been used as “health insurance” for presidents he described as “sickly and worn-out,” arguing that similar situations occurred during the administrations of former Presidents Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and Muhammadu Buhari.
“We’ve been here before: Nigeria is repeatedly used as health insurance for sickly and worn-out presidents, who are then packaged and presented to the public in staged airport ceremonies while the same failed performances are repeated and the country is further destroyed,” Sowore wrote.
He added that what he described as the same pattern had now resurfaced under Tinubu.
“The same actors during the Umaru Yar’Adua and Muhammadu Buhari administrations and now Tinubu,” he stated.
Sowore also criticised those involved in the reception, accusing them of expecting Nigerians to move on without questioning the circumstances surrounding the President’s prolonged absence.
“No shame, no regrets and they want you to move on as though nothing is wrong,” he wrote.
Tinubu returned to Nigeria on Tuesday after spending about 28 days abroad, with the Presidency describing the trip as a working vacation. His return was marked by a reception at the Presidential Wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
