A 55-year-old motorist has escaped unhurt after a moving train collided with his Honda car at the PWD railway crossing in Lagos State, leaving the vehicle extensively damaged.
The incident involved a train travelling towards Agege and a Honda car with registration number EKY 902 JT.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said its officials, working alongside security personnel, rescued the driver and removed the wrecked vehicle from the railway tracks, allowing the train to continue its journey.
Despite the removal of the damaged car, traffic congestion persisted around the PWD axis following the incident.
The vehicle was subsequently handed over to security personnel to facilitate an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commended the agency’s operatives and security personnel for their swift response, noting that effective collaboration was essential in managing emergencies involving railway operations and adjoining roads.
He urged motorists to exercise caution when approaching railway crossings and designated train routes, warning against attempting to cross the tracks when a train was approaching or already in motion.
Bakare-Oki cautioned that disregarding railway safety regulations could result in devastating and irreversible consequences.
The agency also urged motorists and other road users to obey traffic rules, warning that strict compliance with railway safety guidelines was essential to preventing avoidable accidents.
The incident has renewed concerns about safety at railway crossings, where failure to observe warning signals or give way to approaching trains can have serious consequences.
